Why Is My Water Pump Leaking and What Should I Do?
A leaking water pump should never be ignored. A small leak can indicate anything from a worn seal to a damaged pipe connection, and leaving it unattended can eventually cause pump failure or water damage.
Common Reasons for a Leaking Water Pump
1. Worn Mechanical Seal
One of the most common causes of leakage is a worn or damaged mechanical seal. If water is leaking from between the pump casing and motor area, the mechanical seal may need to be replaced.
2. Loose or Damaged Connections
Leaks can occur around threaded fittings, flanges, unions and pipe connections. Check that connections are properly tightened and that damaged O-rings or sealing tape are replaced.
3. Damaged Pump Casing
Cracks caused by freezing, corrosion, impact or excessive pressure can result in water leaking from the pump casing. A cracked casing may require repair or replacement.
4. Worn Gaskets or O-Rings
Over time, rubber seals and gaskets can deteriorate. Replacing the seal or gasket will often resolve the problem.
5. Excessive System Pressure
If the pump is operating against pressures higher than it was designed for, seals and other components can fail prematurely.
What Should You Do?
Switch the pump off first and isolate the electrical supply before inspecting it. Never work on a powered pump while water is leaking around electrical components.
Try to identify exactly where the water is coming from. Check the pipe connections, pump casing, seals and drain plugs for visible signs of leakage.
If the leak is coming from inside the pump or around the motor shaft, it's best to have the pump inspected by a qualified technician rather than continuing to operate it.
