How Do I Know What Size Water Pump I Need for My House?
Choosing the right water pump for your home isn't simply about buying the biggest pump you can afford. The correct pump needs to provide enough flow and pressure to meet your household's requirements without wasting electricity or putting unnecessary strain on your plumbing system.
1. Determine Your Water Demand
Start by considering how many people live in the house and how many outlets may be used at the same time. Showers, toilets, taps, washing machines and garden irrigation all contribute to your water demand.
For a typical home, a pump supplying around 2–4 m³/h may be sufficient, while larger homes or properties with multiple bathrooms may require more.
2. Calculate the Required Pressure
Pressure is just as important as flow. The pump must overcome the difference in elevation between the water source and the highest outlet, as well as friction losses in the pipes.
As a general guide, many household applications require approximately 2–4 bar of pressure at the outlets, depending on the plumbing system and the user's requirements.
3. Consider the Water Source
Your pump selection will also depend on where the water comes from:
- Municipal supply: A booster pump may be required to increase pressure.
- Water tank: A pressure or booster pump can supply the house from the tank.
- Borehole: A submersible borehole pump must be selected according to the borehole depth, water level, required flow and total head.
- Rainwater tank: A suitable transfer or pressure pump can be used for household or irrigation applications.
4. Don't Forget Pipe Size
Small or undersized pipes can cause significant friction losses. A pump may have plenty of capacity, but if the pipework is too small, you may still experience poor pressure and flow.
The pump should therefore be selected together with the pipe diameter, pipe length, fittings and elevation of the installation.
