Vertical Turbine PumpVertical turbine pumps (VTPs) are a type of rotodynamic pump that uses radial flow impellers configured vertically. They typically are multistage pumps with many levels of impellers encased in a bowl assembly. Their first stage impeller usually lays below the water level of the pump. VTPs are typically a multistage build, they have the added advantage of being self-priming and are primarily used to transport water to the surface. Although not intended VTPs can run in reverse as a hydraulic turbine generating power. When used like this the suction nozzle becomes the outlet and the discharge nozzle becomes the inlet of the turbine. The amount of energy the pump can produce is comparable to the amount of energy the pump consumes. Caution must be used, so please check with the manufacturer prior to using a pump as a turbine. |
